Training Manual for the Providers of Youth Friendly Services

Youth represent a large, significant and growing demographic in Egypt. With generally low contraceptive use rates and knowledge about reproductive health, youth represent a relatively high proportion of the country's unmet reproductive health needs. Promoting comprehensive youth-friendly services (YFS) is essential in assisting youth to make responsible sexual and reproductive decisions and empowering them to enforce these decisions.

This brochure reflects a consensus of 40 international experts who convened in New York on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development. Together they reviewed evidence and developed recommendations on how to reduce inequities in access to family planning and other sexual and reproductive health services, particularly for disadvantaged populations.

State of World Population 2009

Publications

This year's flagship report argues that reproductive health care, including family planning, and gender relations could influence the future course of climate change and affect how humanity adapts to rising seas, worsening storms and severe droughts. Women, especially impoverished women in developing countries, bear the disproportionate burden of climate change, but have so far been largely overlooked in the debate about how to address problems of rising seas, droughts, melting glaciers and extreme weather, the report concludes.

State of World Population Report 2010: From Conflict and Crisis to Renewal

The release of the 2010 edition of the State of World Population report coincides with the 10th anniversary of UN Security Council resolution 1325, which recognizes and seeks to address the vulnerability of women and girls to violence during and after armed conflict, and the absence or low level of women’s representation in efforts to prevent war, build peace and restore devastated societies.

Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting: Accelerating Change. UNFPA- UNICEF Joint Programme: 2008 Annual Report

Publications

Since its establishment in 2008, the UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme on FGM/C in Egypt has supported several initiatives/programmes at the community, district and national levels. It has contributed to the development of evidence-based data, monitoring mechanisms and guiding documents.

The UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme has been working closely with the Ministry of Family and Population (MOFP) and Ministry of Health (MOH) to address the growing challenge of medicalization, reinforcement of the FGM/C ban law, and mobilizing social change at the community levels. Furthermore, the Joint Programme has assisted in building capacity of youth, religious leaders, NGOs and medical doctors to advocate against the practice.

Platform for Action: Towards the Abandonment of Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting

Publications

The Joint Programme works closely with the Donors Working Group on FGM/C, a network of public and private agencies from around the world helping to mobilize resources and bring together governments, inter-governmental organizations, and foundations committed to supporting the abandonment of FGM/C. The Joint Programme constitutes the largest and most visible example of collaboration along the lines of the programmatic approach endorsed by the donors working group.
