UNFPA and the Ministry of Local Development are resuming their activities under the EU Support to Egypt’s National Population Strategy project, with workshops in five different governorates.

A four-day workshop was held under the “Accelerating the Local Response to Population Issues” project on 14-17 September, to strengthen the capacities of the population task forces in Aswan, Luxor, Qena, Sohag and Assiut.

The project aims to strengthen the population portfolio at the governorate level and builds on the available mechanisms. Population taskforces are formed under the project under the leadership of the different governors.

Being a multisectoral issue, the population taskforces include multiple stakeholders namely, the newly established population units within the governorates directorate, branches of the National Population Council, representatives from multiple directorates (health, youth, education, manpower, etc), youth representatives, population focal points at district and village levels.  It also brings together corporate social responsibility focal points, NGOs and academia.

Participants of the workshops included members of the population units within the governorates, along with young people and representatives from different directorates. The workshops tackled population dynamics, data management, monitoring and reporting, partnerships and advocacy.

Participants will present the achieved results and best practices in order to share expertise and knowledge.

The project is currently being implemented in ten governorates.

The EU Support to Egypt’s National Population Strategy works on strengthening the institutional capacities for monitoring and coordinating the implementation of the project.
