Celebrating World Refugee Day, the international day that falls on June 20 honoring refugees for their rights and efforts to seek safety and dignity, UNFPA and its implementing partners Etijah and the Ministry of Youths and Sports, conducted multiple community mobilization events in different governorates in the Women and Girls Safe Spaces (WGSS).
The events comprised diverse activities to reach different gender and age groups, such as awareness-raising sessions on gender-based violence against women and girls and reproductive health, mental health and psychosocial support group sessions, sports activities for youth and children, menstrual health and hygiene management activities for adolescent girls, and dance and music performances for all refugee communities.
“The Women and Girls Safe Space team is like my family here in Egypt. I received so much love and support from them. After attending the activities in the WGSS, I am now able to speak, laugh, and live again”, said a 48-year-old Sudanese woman, who was subjected to violence while being forced to flee to Egypt to escape the conflict in Sudan.
The events provided a good platform for refugee communities to rebuild their social networks, learn more about important topics such as protection, and familiarize themselves with the available services in the WGSS.
