UNFPA participated in a panel discussion on “Human Capital and Population Health: Keys to building a resilient community,” at the Global Congress on Population, Health and Human Development on October 24.
Panelists discussed the relationship between health, human capital, and sustainable population growth, the impact of investment in human capital on health outcomes and on building resilient communities.
The panel comprised Ms. Dawlat Shaarawy, UNFPA Population and Development Program Analyst, Dr. Sameh El Saharty, Senior Health Policy Advisor, Consultant at the World Bank, Dr. Nahla Abdeltawab, Country Director of the Population Council in Egypt, Ms. Tanja Dedovic, Regional Thematic Specialist on Labor Mobility and Social Inclusion at the Regional Office of IOM, Dr. Naeema Al Gasseer, Global Health and Sustainable Development Expert and former WHO Representative in Egypt and Mr. Ricardo Lourneco, AVP Country Lead Brazil, Organon.
The panel was moderated by Mr. Tim Evans, Dean, School of Population and Global Health, McGill University, World Bank.
Shaarawy explained the link between human capital and resilience. “Healthier populations will be able to better withstand shocks and adapt to changes, educated individuals will be more empowered to make informed decisions, a skilled workforce will drive an economic force and that will lead to greater resilience,” she explained.
She added that UNFPA adopts a holistic approach where health, education and empowerment, especially for women and young people, will drive sustainable population growth and a brighter future for all.
