UNFPA organized a training workshop on National Transfer Accounts (NTA), a tool used to map the flow of resources across generations within a country to estimate the demographic dividend.
The demographic dividend is the accelerated economic growth that begins with changes in the age structure of a country’s population.
The two-day workshop held on November 20-21, was attended by members of the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) from the Economic and Population Statistics Sectors as well as the UNFPA Population and Development team.
It was led by Dr Morne Oosthuizen, Chief Research Officer, Deputy Director Development Policy Research Unit, School of Economics, University of Cape Town.
Because working-age adults produce more than they consume, and children and older persons consume more than they produce, it is crucial to assess the demographic and economic opportunities and challenges of the current and future changes in age structure and implication for attainment of Egypt’s development aspirations.
The workshop provided participants with an overview of the NTA approach and methodology to initiate using this tool to understand the economic implications of the demographic transition and to inform policy responses to the emerging challenges and opportunities that are arising from these changes.
