CAIRO, EGYPT — UNFPA Egypt has launched an online campaign for combating sexual harassment. The campaign consists of several questions that help reveal the attitudes of people towards the issue. The quiz was available during the month of July on several popular Egyptian websites (space donated by Sarmady) and showed that the majority of people are aware of the existence of sexual harassment and that it takes place everywhere. It also showed that although 72 percent are in favor of a law addressing the issue, almost half of the respondents will not take action if they witness harassment.
In percentages, the results of the responses revealed that:
- 18.65 percent of the respondents were women while the majority, 81 percent, were men.
- 99 percent of respondents are well aware of the existence and prevalence of sexual harassment.
- 70 percent know that sexual harassment can take place anywhere (schools, street, home and at work).
- Almost 40 percent will not do anything if they see someone harassing a woman.
- 40 percent think veiled women are not subjected to sexual harassment as much as unveiled or foreigners.
- 72 percent think there should be a law addressing sexual harassment.
