The National Council for Women (NCW) and UNFPA are inaugurating two more units to combat violence against women in the Benha University campus, one for students to report incidents of violence and harassment along with a medical response unit to deal with women subjected to violence in the university hospital offering comprehensive medical services including protection and referral.
This brings the number of existing “Anti-Violence against Women Units” in educational institutions to 25 in 25 national universities across Egypt, offering informative sessions, educational camps for students and on-campus campaigns as well as reporting processes and documentation of incidents of violence against women on campus. On the other hand, it brings the number of “Medical Response Clinics to GBV” to four.
Dr. Randa Mostafa, Benha University Vice President of Community and Environmental Affairs in Benha University, headed a meeting to discuss and adopt a cooperation protocol between NCW and the university to inaugurate the these two units this year. Representatives from the university and the National Council for Women attended the meeting. The attendees expressed their support for empowering women, and combating violence against women.
The cooperation agreement includes design and implementation of capacity building program for medical service providers and nurses in the university hospital on comprehensive GBV case management that covers documentation and referral to legal and social services. The agreement also covers the furnishing of the clinic’s premises inside the University Hospital,
UNFPA through its partnership with NCW developed the first operational manual compiling good practices and procedures to establish such units in educational institutes in Egypt.
