In partnership with the Ministry of Health and Population, UNFPA held the first Annual Coordination Meeting for Enhancing Egyptian Women’s Health through Safe Women Clinics, signalling a significant step toward strengthening integrated, survivor-centered care within Egypt’s primary healthcare system.
The meeting was held on April 16-17 in Alexandria, with the support of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation.
The meeting saw the participation of H.E. Dr. Amr Kandil, Deputy Minister of Health and Population for Preventive and Primary Health Care; H.E. Dr. Sahar El Sonbaty, President of the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood; and Yves Sassenrath, UNFPA Representative in Egypt, marking a collective commitment to advancing women’s health, protection, and empowerment.
The Safe Women Clinics offer medical services, examination, psychological first-aid, internal hospital referral as well as multi-sectoral referral to legal and social services for women subjected to violence. Under the Ministry of Health and Population, the clinics integrate comprehensive reproductive health services with specialized support for survivors of gender-based violence (GBV), including psychological care and referrals to legal and social services—all within the public healthcare system.
Since the first pilot clinic launched in Cairo’s Al-Salam district in 2021, this model has proven its potential to transform how women and girls access critical care—with dignity, confidentiality, and compassion at its core.
This meeting served not only as a space to reflect on progress, but also to build momentum for expanding and sustaining this initiative nationwide—through multisectoral coordination, shared responsibility, and unwavering partnership.
