The Ministry of Health and Population and UNFPA organized a briefing for journalists on population issues, on November 5, in collaboration with the National Population Council and with the support of the European Union.

The briefing was attended and included presentations by Dr. Tarek Tawfik, Deputy Minister of Health and Population for Population Affairs, Dr. Hossam Abbas, Head of the ministry’s Family Planning Sector, Dr. Tej Ram Jat, UNFPA Reproductive Health Program Specialist and Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Health and Population, and Dawlat Shaarawy, Population and Development Program Analyst at UNFPA.

Dr. Abdel Ghaffar explained that the workshop comes as part of the ministry’s commitment to raise awareness on population issues and enhance family planning services, and referred to a unified media guide developed by the ministry along with the National Population Council and UNFPA, that includes rights-based messages.

On his part, Dr. Ram Jat explained that the media plays a very important role in conveying information, promoting awareness and driving positive change among general populations.

“All of us must remember one key message that the population and development is about improving the quality of life of people and not about numbers,” he said, “We need to further accelerate the implementation of the ICPD Program of Action to achieve the inclusive, equitable and sustainable vision of ICPD and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.”
