UNFPA trained 45 case workers from 13 Women and Girls Safe Spaces (WGSS) across Egypt on Cash Assistance under gender-based violence (GBV) Case Management.

Cash Assistance is a tool that can facilitate women and girls’ access to comprehensive GBV prevention and response services by addressing financial barriers under a careful assessment of GBV case management.

By contributing to safe relocation, reducing reliance on harmful coping strategies, and supporting long-term recovery, Cash Assistance can be an efficient tool in addressing survivors' immediate needs, and supporting their escape from violence.

The Women and Girls Safe Spaces supported by UNFPA offer comprehensive gender-based violence against women and girls services for refugees, in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports and Etijah NGO.

“We have met many survivors whose lives were changed through the cash assistance,” a case worker says.

The Cash Assistance is part of a larger humanitarian assistance programme that mainstreams protection and that include referral systems to other services.

Three workshops were held in Cairo and Aswan in August and September to build the capacity of trainers, minimize safety risks, and maximize support for survivors.

Case workers were capacitated to ensure that recipients of the Cash Assistance are carefully assessed and selected, along with a clear cash safety plan and a case action plan that can help the recipients safely fulfill their objectives.

“We find challenges from time to time. Training allows us to provide better safety plans for survivors, and for ourselves” – one case worker noted. “It helps us to be on the same page, discuss the challenges, and find solutions, so we all provide the same quality”.
