More often than not, communities practice FGM believing that it will safeguard a girl's chastity. Families are under pressure to subject their daughters to FGM driven by the desire for social acceptance and avoidance of stigma.

FGM is practiced based on the belief that it is what others do, expect, and approve of.In order to eradicate FGM, enough people must see other people abandoning the practice.

It is the strong voices of survivors, of community leaders, of fathers and brothers and grandmothers, that will be the driving force behind the total abandonment of FGM.
