Cairo, 8 March 2018 - In commemoration of the International Women’s Day, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in collaboration with the National Council for Women (NCW) and the National Council for Disability Affairs celebrated yesterday the International Women’s Day.

The event took place in Gezira Youth Center, in the attendance of Dr. Aleksandar Bodiroza, UNFPA Representative in Egypt, Dr. Ashraf Marie, Secretary General of the National Council for Disability Affairs, Dr. Heba Hagrass, Board Member of the National Council for Women and Dr. Hayat Khattab, President of the Egyptian Paralympic Committee.

The celebration of the International Women’s Day this year focused on women with disabilities, highlighting a number of success stories of women who were able to challenge their disabilities and achieve remarkable success in different fields, including Paralympic champions. The event focued on highlighting the achievements that were accomplished in 2017, the year of the Egyptian Woman, including the amendment of the FGM law and the opening of four new anti-sexual harassment units in Alexandria, Fayoum, Minya Universities and the Academy of Arts. The celebration will also have a number of artistic performances including a musical performance by “Al-Nour Wal Amal” orchestra.

The event included also wide participation of NGOs working in the field of access for disabilities, presenting their activities throughout the day using interactive methods and edutainment games. On the side of the celebration a number of games and sports activities accessible for people with disabilities organized in Al-Gezeira youth centre throughout the day with gender inclusion approaches.
